About the Authors
Jill Kinney, Ph. D., is executive director of Home, Safe, a private Seattle, WA, nonprofit corporation begun in 1992 to develop and implement innovative approaches to helping families throughout the United States. For the last five years, Kinney's work has focused on development of professional and natural helper partnerships, worker resiliency techniques and options for helping people with drug problems if they refuse drug treatment or the 12-step model.
Kathy Strand, M.S.W., is a program associate for Home, Safe. She worked as a program developer and research associate for Behavioral Sciences Institute on program evaluation and on development of a new approach to drug abuse. She has worked in mental health settings in inner Seattle and other locations for 11 years, providing direct services to the most disabled people. The last three years she has worked with Dr. Kinney on professional and natural-helper partnerships in Tacoma, WA, and on options for helping people with drug problems.
John Mattingly is Senior Associate for the Annie E. Casey Foundation. He is the manager of the Family to Family: Reconstructing Foster Care Initiative. He has over 25 years' experience in family support and child welfare administration.
